Why Linen? The Complete Guide to one of the Worlds Oldest Textiles

Linen isn't just another trend—it's one of the oldest textiles in human history. Archaeological evidence shows linen was used in ancient Egypt over 5,000 years ago, prized by pharaohs for its breathability, durability, and luxurious feel. It was so valued that linen cloth was used as currency and wrapped around mummies to preserve them for eternity.

There's a reason linen has stood the test of time: it works. For thousands of years, across cultures and climates, linen has been the fabric of choice for those who value comfort, quality, and longevity. Today, it's experiencing a resurgence—not because it's new, but because people are rediscovering what our ancestors always knew.

At Le Edit, we believe there are real benefits from experiencing linen in its purest form—100% natural.  We never blend our Linen with synthetics like polyester, viscose, or rayon (just other words for plastic). This guide explores why linen is the foundation of any considered capsule wardrobe, and what makes ours different.

What Is Linen?

Linen is a natural fabric made from the fibres of the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum). Unlike synthetic fabrics derived from petroleum, linen comes entirely from nature.

The flax plant requires minimal water, pesticides, or fertilisers to grow, making it one of the most sustainable crops on earth.

Once harvested, the flax stalks are processed to extract the long, strong fibres that are spun into yarn and woven into fabric.

The entire plant is used—nothing goes to waste—and at the end of its life, linen biodegrades naturally, returning nutrients to the soil.

What Makes Le Edit Linen Different?

Next time you're shopping, check the tags. It's shocking how many pieces—even from luxury brands—are blended with viscose, rayon, or polyester (just different words for plastic). What's more shocking? It happens even at premium price points.

Take a moment to check the labels in your own wardrobe too. Anything labeled "linen blend" is likely mixed with synthetics to cut costs. The result: you lose the natural benefits of pure linen and gain all the downsides of plastic—microplastic shedding, reduced breathability, and fabrics that don't age well.

We don't blend our linen with plastic. It is 100% pure flax fibre. Giving you all the natural benefits linen has to offer, without the microplastics, chemicals, or performance trade-offs that come with blended fabrics.

When you choose natural fibres like linen, you're not just making a better choice for the planet—you're making a better choice for your body. Synthetic fibres contain harmful chemicals that can disrupt your hormones and endocrine system.  Microfibres being absorbed into your body when worn and released into the environment when washed.

Pure linen works with your body, not against it.

What Are the Benefits of Linen?

Breathable

Linen offers exceptional air circulation thanks to its naturally hollow flax fibres and loosely woven structure. Air flows freely through the fabric, keeping you comfortable even on the warmest days.

Temperature Regulating & Hygroscopic

Linen adapts to your body and the environment. It keeps you cool in summer by releasing excess heat, and warm in winter by retaining warmth when you need it. This natural thermoregulation means linen works across seasons—making it one of the most versatile fabrics in your wardrobe.

Sustainable

Made from the flax plant, linen is a completely natural fabric that requires minimal water and resources to grow. It's 100% biodegradable, breaking down naturally at the end of its life to nourish the soil rather than pollute it. Linen is one of the most sustainable fabrics available.

Hypoallergenic

Linen is pH neutral and gentle on the skin, making it ideal for those with sensitive skin or allergies. Unlike synthetic fabrics that can trap irritants and chemicals against your skin, linen allows your skin to breathe.

Antibacterial & Moisture-Wicking

Linen is naturally resistant to odour and microbes. It draws moisture away from your skin, keeping you dry and comfortable throughout the day. Because bacteria need moisture to grow, linen's breathability and quick-drying nature help inhibit bacterial growth naturally. Linen also contains lignin, a natural compound that prevents moisture retention and further protects against bacteria.

High Frequency

Linen has a frequency of 5,000 Hz—the highest of any fabric. In contrast, synthetic fibres like polyester and nylon measure below 100 Hz. While the science of fabric frequency is still being explored, many believe higher-frequency fabrics support the body's natural energy and wellbeing.

Strong but Soft

Linen is one of the strongest natural fibres, which means it lasts for years. The flax fibres actually get softer with each wear and wash, offering a relaxed, timeless look that only gets better with age. This is slow fashion at its best—pieces that improve over time rather than breaking down.

Biodegradable

At the end of its life, linen returns safely to the earth. Unlike synthetic fabrics that sit in landfills for hundreds of years, linen breaks down naturally, enriching the soil like compost. It's a complete, circular lifecycle.

How do You Wash and Care for Linen?

One of linen's best qualities is how easy it is to care for—and how it actually improves with age. Here's how to keep your linen pieces looking and feeling their best:

Washing

  • Linen can be machine washed, but we recommend washing in cold water only on a gentle cycle
  • Use a mild, natural detergent (avoid harsh chemicals and bleach)
  • Linen can be washed separately or with similar colors
  • Don't overload the machine—linen needs room to move freely

Drying

  • Air dry flat or hang in a well-ventilated area, out of direct sunlight to prevent fading
  • We do not recommend using an iron, as high heat can cause shrinkage and damage the natural fibres
  • Linen dries quickly thanks to its natural moisture-wicking properties

Ironing & Wrinkles

  • Linen wrinkles easily—and that's part of its charm. The relaxed, lived-in look is what makes linen effortlessly cool
  • If you prefer a crisper look, use a handheld steamer on a low to medium setting while the fabric is slightly damp
  • Avoid high heat, which can scorch or weaken the fibres over time

Always check the care label on your specific garment, as some pieces may have additional care requirements.

The Beauty of Aging

Linen gets softer, more comfortable, and more beautiful with every wash. You can expect your garment to naturally evolve over time with its natural wrinkles and gentle fading. Every garment will wear differently deepening on how it's been washed and worn, making it totally unique to you. This is slow fashion at its finest—pieces that improve over time.

With proper care, your linen pieces will last for years, becoming wardrobe favorites that only get better with age.
